How Are CEREC Dental Crowns, Veneers, And Dental Restorations Made?
CEREC technology allows for the creation of dental crowns, veneers, and other dental restorations in a streamlined and efficient manner. The team at Midtown Dental is experienced in creating dental restorations with training in computer-aided manufacturing for the fabrication process. Here’s a breakdown of how CEREC dental crowns, veneers, and restorations are made:
Digital Impressions
The process begins with a Midtown Dental team member using an intraoral scanner to capture a digital impression of the patient’s teeth. The scanner uses advanced 3D imaging technology to create a highly accurate digital model of the teeth and surrounding oral structures, eliminating the need for traditional putty-like impressions and making the experience more comfortable for the patient.
CAD Software Design
The digital impression is transferred to a computer, where specialized CAD (computer-aided design) software is used. While using computer software, analyzes the digital model and uses the software to design the desired dental crown, veneer, or restoration. The software allows for customization, taking into account factors such as shape, size, and color, to create a restoration that blends seamlessly with the patient’s natural teeth.
Milling
Once the design is finalized, the CAD data is sent to a milling machine. This machine carves the restoration out of a solid block of ceramic material, such as porcelain. The milling process uses precise cutting tools to shape the material according to the CAD design, resulting in an accurate and well-fitting end-product.
Finishing And Customization
After the milling process, the crown, veneer, or restoration may undergo additional refinements to achieve the desired aesthetics and functionality. Our experienced team may use techniques such as staining, glazing, or layering to enhance the appearance and natural translucency of the restoration. These customization steps ensure that the final result closely matches the patient’s natural teeth in color, texture, and overall appearance.
Bonding Or Placement
Once ready, we bond or place the finished product onto the patient’s tooth. For a CEREC crown procedure and more extensive restorations, the tooth is prepared by removing any decay or existing restorations and shaping it to accommodate the new restoration. Dental adhesives are used to bond the restoration securely to the tooth surface. Veneers are usually bonded to the front surface of the teeth with a strong adhesive.
Are CEREC Restorations As Good As Traditional Restorations?
In addition to their aesthetic appeal, CEREC restorations offer the advantage of preserving more of the natural tooth structure. Compared to traditional restorations, CEREC restorations require less removal of healthy tooth structure during the preparation process. This conservative approach promotes better long-term oral health by maintaining the strength and integrity of the natural tooth.
Another significant advantage of CEREC is the convenience it provides. With CEREC, restorations can be completed in a single dental visit. Traditional restorations often require multiple appointments, during which patients may need to wear a temporary crown or restoration while waiting for the final restoration to be fabricated in a dental laboratory.
While the success of any restoration ultimately depends on factors such as the patient’s oral health and proper oral hygiene maintenance, CEREC offers numerous benefits in terms of quality, aesthetics, preservation of tooth structure, and convenience.
What Does A CEREC Dentist’s Office Look Like?
Midtown Dental is one of the only dental offices in Sacramento with a PrimePrint 3D printing system from Dentsply Sirona.
The PrimPrint 3D printer offers high-quality printing capabilities for a range of dental applications. With advanced additive manufacturing technology, PrimePrint ensures precise and accurate dental models, resulting in exceptional dental implants, CEREC crowns, and other restorations.
The printer must be operated by a dental professional, which is why Midtown Dental held a group training during a recent professional development day.
Midtown Dental strives to incorporate cutting-edge technology to eliminate potential downsides to treatment, such as multiple visits.
